Information about the process of treatment
Psychotherapy and medication treatment are individually designed for each person. At the start of treatment there will be a psychiatric evaluation, which generally is an interview lasting one to two hours, in one or two sessions. At the end of the evaluation, there will be a discussion about how to proceed. Input from the prospective patient is crucial to developing a good treatment plan. The patient's hopes, goals and feelings about treatment are paramount in this process. Various options for treatment will be discussed and a treatment plan completed.
Some patients will have had experience in psychotherapy and/or medication, and others have not. How psychotherapy works will be discussed. If medication is recommended, options will be explained.
The relationship between a physician and patient is one in which strong feelings may occur. In psychiatry they may be even more important. A patient must feel comfortable with their psychiatrist. At times, they may need to feel comfortable enough to bring up discomfort or criticism about treatment.
Prescribing and taking psychiatric medication is a complicated process. How medication "works" is not always clear, but all medication will be recommended based on the best "evidenced based" findings. Some medication requires laboratory monitoring; the patient’s general health status and other medications will be followed.
